The Perfect Complement For Any Landscape Design
Decorative rocks are the complimentary component of any landscape design. Use them to decorate your yard as ground covers. You can also use them as a functional item to create barriers or serve as mulch. Let’s take a look at some of the most common types of decorative rocks.
Pea Gravel
Small rocks that are excellent for paths and walkways. They typically come in a range of brown, tan and white color mixes. Because of their size and shape, these rocks tend to easily move which may not be the best choice for supporting garden furniture. Thus, they are best suited for patio areas, pathways and filling in between flat rock, like flagstones.
River Rocks
River rocks are a bit bigger than pea gravel. Because they come from rivers, these rocks have a smooth polish finish. They provide a rustic, natural feel to your landscaping design and are often used to edge flower beds or create drainage and erosion control areas within beds.
Like any other surface material, river rocks require a compacted base to prevent them from sinking and edging to contain them.
Flagstone
Flagstone are flat pieces of stone which make them perfect stepping stones. You can use them to build an entire patio or a walkway. Even though you can put them directly on the ground, it is best when you lay them over a foundation of sand to provide a stable surface which will prevent them from sliding or shifting.
Boulders
Boulders are pieces of rock which have broken off, as the natural consequence of long-term water exposure. You can use them to create visual “focal points” in your overall landscape design.
