Dyed Mulch vs. Regular Mulch

Using Mulch in Landscaping

Mulch brings several benefits to your garden and flower beds. It helps maintain soil moisture in specific areas, regulates temperature, protecting your plants and flowers from unplanned hot and cold spells, and simplifies lawn and garden maintenance. When you are in the market for mulch, you have two options: Dyed Mulch and Regular Mulch.

What Is Dyed Mulch?

Also known as colored mulches, dyed mulches have become a very popular material to fill up landscaping beds. Any shredded wood that has been dyed to take a color that a mulch would not have naturally is considered ‘‘colored’’ mulch. These mulches are commonly made out from recycled wood like fence posts, old pallets, decks, crates, demolition and construction products, among others.

What Is Dyed MulchThese pieces of wood are usually dyed with vegetable-based dye. You will find the following colors:

  • Red: colored with iron oxide
  • Black: colored with carbon black
  • Dark Brown: carbon-based dyes for black

These colored options are very attractive because they make gardens and flowerbeds stand up while providing all the benefits of mulch. Plus, they hold their color longer than traditional ground bark or hardwood mulch.

The dyes themselves are not considered toxic to animals, people or plants. Just beware because some cheap dyes can be dyed with harmful or toxic chemicals that will damage your garden, flowerbeds or any other vegetative areas.

Natural Mulch

These types of mulches are made directly from trees like cedar pine. They offer a discrete look which blends in beautifully to natural surroundings. However, over time it loses its original color rather quickly. That nice brown mulch will eventually turn into a grayish color, as the elements take their toll.
